What's In My Knapsack?...Part 3

3 minute read

The third piece of personal equipment in our knapsack is our…

                                      Behaviours.

Behaviour refers to the actions we take in life, the way we conduct ourselves. As with all the personal items in this metaphorical knapsack, we are the owner of our behaviours.

The owner has control, is responsible and bears the consequences or reaps the benefits of their behaviour. No one else owns this with us.

When we do not have clear ownership lines on our behaviour, it is very difficult to sort out the way forward, to see clearly in order to bring a satisfactory resolution to an issue. We cannot see the definition or boundary line so that the valuable things can be protected.

Many times we hear of people blaming others for their behaviour.

A person of strong healthy character, has the capacity to own and not blame. The emotional maturity that operates in this person of strong healthy character is something that we can all grow.

  We are not born mature!

The benefit of being able to own my own behaviour, is that I am then able to separate myself internally from others and assess the condition of my own life.

I can see and feel my own responses to a situation or a person and decide what it is I am responsible for and what I am not responsible for.

Then, I can take action to put myself in the right position for a healthy outcome.

This may mean an apology and a change of direction, or forgiveness of an offence, or it could mean that my behaviour was appropriate, loving toward others and the right action is just to stand firm and remain self- controlled.

My behaviours are my personal equipment. They will create my life.
