What's In My Knapsack?... Part 4

3 minute read

Our metaphorical, internal ‘Knapsack’ holds the personal treasures that equip us to do life’s journey.

We have unpacked three of these treasures, our feelings, our attitudes and our behaviours.

Now we will look at another valuable item we all have in there, to gain awareness and appreciation of how we can use these aspects of our humanity to help us in our way forward.

The next item in the knapsack that we have is… Choice.

Choice requires freedom and how responsible we are with that freedom is a choice .

I am the owner of my life and because I am the owner, I have rightful control over my life and am free as an adult to choose, my direction, my friends, my career and anything pertaining to me.

When we make decisions that are not free, but are based on ‘should’ or other people’s desires for us, we will often feel resentful or begrudging.

To be able to be free in our choices, we will need to define ourselves to ourselves and then to others, to protect our heart. We do this by listening to our feelings and taking ownership of them, refusing to sit in blame. Responsible choices tend to follow.

Good relationships and communication keep us safe in our choices.

We alone are responsible for what we choose and we will either… bear the consequences of our poor choices or reap the benefits of choices that are free and responsible.

This sense of choice is what helps us feel in control of ourselves.

When other people are in control of our lives and there is no choice, we lose a very important aspect of our well being. When we cannot operate with a free will, love is lost.

Free and responsible choices are essential items to pack…

… for a successful life!
