So You Know How To Stop Right?

3 minute read

Yes, the ability to stop when you have been moving forward in a certain direction!

It takes some awareness that up ahead, I may need to stop or change direction and if I have the awareness…

do I have the skill?

The inability to stop, to create a limit, can cause anxiety to rise.

That feeling of being out of control, not quite sure that you can stop if you need to, can create stress, rob us of confidence and creativity.

We feel very much better if we are sure of our skills and our awareness is high, on when and how to stop whatever it is that needs to stop!

The secret to stopping, is not about the circumstances providing the right environment, such as skiing down a mountain and an upward slope appears just as you hit ‘out of control mode’ or going into a possible difficult conversation and the conversation is avoided. PHEW!

No,  the ability to stop, is the ability to have the control that is needed, inside myself, to recognise my options, employ the skills I have learnt, to evaluate what I do have control over and what I do not have control over and to choose to be pro- active, rather than a victim.

It has with it a sense of my own separateness, not merged with the situation, but having choices and the ability to protect myself, with good boundary lines which I can put in place where necessary.

Boundary lines protect from fear and anxiety taking hold, when I know I have control of my own self and am not dependent on what life does or does not give me, so that I can confidently say …

“Yes,  I know how to stop!”
