The Paradox Of Power

3 minute read

Paradox: something (such as a situation) that is made up of two opposite things that seem impossible but that is actually true or possible. (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Power is something we all need and like. It gives us a sense of control in our life so that we can achieve and be present in meaningful ways.

It can be used to help or harm depending on the character of the one exercising it.

Power can be feared as something to stay away from, in case it turns me into a dominating controlling person, or it can be embraced as something that can bring benefit to others, when its capacity to influence is used constructively.

It can be something sought after in reaction to deprivation or injustice and used to spread anger and hatred or it can be sought after to recover from a great sense of powerlessness that circumstances may have wired into us.

Power though, has its healthy source in self-control, rather than the control of others to gain power, or the use of power to self- sabotage and injure myself.

The power of self- control begins with qualities such as humility,

and the ability to reach out for help.

It is not self- sufficient. It is proactive rather than reactive in life. It can own its own condition

without blame, excuse or denial. It is grateful and looks outside of itself for connection .

It recognises that it has choice, where before it may have felt that there was no choice.

We go down to go up.

These qualities may appear to be weak rather than powerful, hence the paradox, but they are the way forward into a truly powerful life. They can open the door out of addiction and into healthy connection that brings power back into my life and consequently, uplifts and empowers those around me.

Healthy increase of power begins with the power to humble myself …

                                               … a powerful paradox!
