Imagine...

3 minute read

Verb : form a mental image or concept of.

We are naturally very competent at imagining the worst in a situation. We can plumb the depths of problems and see in our mind’s eye the things that could cause us worry and anxiety. This negativity is a default mode of many people.

Our imagination is a faculty that we all have. It can be directed down into problems, increasing the focus there, or up into possibility, increasing the focus into that place. We actually can choose where we put our focus.

One thing is sure.

We will get more of what we focus on!

To imagine a possibility out of a problem, we first need to suspend the problem to the side for a little while. We also need to believe that it’s not only what happens to us in life but how we respond to what happens in life that keeps us stable, and productive.

Possibility thinking comes when we engage our imagination upward. We imagine where we would like to be. Where is that for you dear reader?

We listen to our heart and put to the side any filters such as money, other people’s opinions, our past experience and any self - imposed ceiling that we have lived under, such as our own expectations and the expectations of others.

In this free place internally, our imagination can form a mental image or concept of where we would like to be. We can see and feel what our imagination forms.

This mental image or concept that is formed can serve to draw us forward .

Having formed this substance in our mind and heart, we can then come back and look at the problem with new eyes of possibility and make a plan and some practical goals to move us toward what we can internally see or feel. The goal needs to be a SMART goal which stands for …Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed. Stay within those guidelines and you will have the pathway for a mature and productive outcome.

We can only control what we own and not what we do not own. This is the practice of healthy boundaries.

Go forward…

… from this place of clear internal vision.
